United States
For nearly 125 years and to this day, O’Melveny has built its reputation practicing on the cutting edge of American law. Our exceptional group of US lawyers is at the core of our global platform operating across three continents. Whether appearing before the Supreme Court of the United States, litigating a high-stakes case for a Wall Street bank, representing a major studio in its latest Hollywood financing, or negotiating the restructuring of a multibillion-dollar enterprise, O’Melveny has the depth and breadth of experience to give its clients a competitive edge.
Typical of our high-profile engagements are our representations of Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and New Century Financial. O’Melveny has been representing AMD in a global fight against Intel Corporation for monopolizing the x86-microprocessor industry through scare tactics and coercion, in one of the largest ongoing antitrust cases. With litigation and investigations spanning the US, EU and Asia, O’Melveny has helped AMD secure important victories. In addition, we also served as debtors’ counsel for New Century in its Chapter 11 case, in what many would point to as the bankruptcy that raised the warning flag for the financial crisis. The bankruptcy case, filed in April 2007, ranked as the largest Chapter 11 filing in 2007 and the ninth largest of all time. The plan's settlements, particularly its methodology for resolving claims of New Century's loan purchasers, saved the estate over US$8 million of administrative costs and since have been emulated in several other Chapter 11 cases involving financial services companies.
Since the formation in 1885 of our partnership in Los Angeles, our West Coast presence has grown to five offices in Los Angeles, Century City, Newport Beach, San Francisco, and Silicon Valley—one of the strongest law firm presences in America's largest economy and leading technology state. On the Eastern seaboard, our Washington, DC and New York offices operate in the political, financial, and regulatory capitals of the US, assisting clients with major transactions, litigation, investigations, and public policy issues.
Our partner ranks feature many lawyers from both major political parties who have served at senior government levels and can provide invaluable insights into political trends, policymaking agendas, and regulatory pitfalls. The many public-service roles previously held by our lawyers include: US Secretary of State; US Secretary of Transportation; White House Counsel; Deputy Secretary, US Department of Commerce; Chairman, US Federal Trade Commission; Director, US Federal Trade Commission, Bureau of Competition; Acting Solicitor General, US Justice Department; Deputy Director, US Securities and Exchange Commission, Division of Corporation Finance; and US Homeland Security Advisor.
