We have created a bespoke training programme of workshops, seminars and case studies which aims to advance both your legal knowledge and business practice skills using real life scenarios to enhance learning and confidence in an informal environment. In addition, all of our lawyers are given training to develop their presentation and networking skills. As a trainee you are given the opportunity to contribute to internal and external legal briefings and firm wide know how and to attend external courses and presentations that are of particular interest to you. Regular feedback and mentoring is provided throughout the course of your training.
Training doesn’t stop at the end of your training contract. Many of our lawyers are leaders in their fields and we invest heavily in training to keep them there.
Would You Like to Get Involved in a Variety of Projects?
Our trainees experience a minimum of three six-month seats with the remaining six months possibly being split between two areas. Experience is focussed primarily on our core international transactions and adversarial practices as follows:
- Corporate finance and M&A
- Private equity and international funds
- Banking, capital markets, finance, and restructuring
- International arbitration and litigation
Our core practice areas are supported by experts in a number of areas of legal practice, including taxation (which often involves cross-border structuring), real estate, regulatory services, intellectual property and information technology. All our lawyers are UK qualified but a number of the resident lawyers are multilingual and/or are also qualified in jurisdictions outside the UK. In conjunction with the firm’s Brussels office, the London team also provides a full competition and merger clearance service.
Our London based lawyers work with colleagues and clients in Asia, Europe, and the US to deliver a seamless global service and, from time-to-time, are required to travel to other locations. We also maintain close relationships with a number of the best independent law firms across Europe so we can provide coverage on pan-European assignments.
Would You Like to Be Involved in Rewarding Pro Bono Work?
From the foundation of the office in 2004, we have developed a strong culture of encouraging and supporting a firm-wide pro bono initiative. Pro bono programmes are accessible to our lawyers and staff at all levels, and individuals are encouraged to join existing schemes or to play an active role in developing new initiatives.
The initiative in London currently covers legal pro bono as well as community services. Present programmes include a Law Works Community Business Clinic which provides free legal advice to small businesses, community groups and social enterprises. O’Melveny also works closely with the Tower Hamlets Education Business Partnership: we participate in a reading scheme, providing support to young children at a local primary school. We are seeking to extend our commitment to other programmes run or supported by the Tower Hamlets Education Business Partnership, such as mentoring secondary school students or becoming school governors so that we can contribute to our local community and in so doing help to increase the aspirations particularly of the younger members of that community. Additionally, we act for a growing number of charitable and not-for-profit organisations.

We're Not Just About Work

Recent events include ten-pin bowling, a quiz night, wine tasting, jewellery making, a fashion show, a summer party, 5-a-side football, a Jack the Ripper guided walk of the City and an annual skiing trip. Many a legal problem has been resolved in discussions over the table-football game in the break-out room!
Vacation Placements
We offer vacation placements where prospective trainees are invited to spend two weeks at the London office during the summer vacation. Work experience may also be available at other times subject to capacity.

Financial Assistance
